Last week, a press release dropped in my inbox announcing the arrival of a new concept speed-dating night called ” Shhh “. In a nutshell, it’s silent speed-dating; no talking allowed, the idea being that it will create “a deeper, instantaneous connection” between lonely people looking for love or a fuck. My immediate reaction was exhaustion. Londoners, not satisfied spending their entire weekends photographing street art in car parks or eating cronuts in onesies, seem to have roped their love lives into the endless quest for novelty. Chit-chat aside, I had some reservations about the “full-on” nature of the Shhh experience. Even in my most intense relationships, the idea of someone fixing me with some dreamy, thin-lipped pout-gaze does something to my acid reflux. But then I am also very conscious of dying alone. So off I went. The press release boasted that this was for “people who want to find deep connections, without the mask of predictable conversations”.

By Bethany Whymark. London has a well-publicised shortage of building space. But two entrepreneurs, armed with plenty of creative vision, have found an inventive way around this problem with their latest venture by revamping an old building — a year-old public toilet. After two and a half years of hard graft, the project has come to fruition. Inside the enigmatic pair have made the most of the structure as it stood. The ceiling is still dominated by small, translucent windows set deeply into the concrete roof in neat grids, the urinals and toilet are recycled from the old building, and cubicle doors are repurposed as scrubbed wooden tables.
The jam-packed bar served Prosecco, fruity Pinot Grigio and mellow Tempranillo to the hordes of guests. While refilling glass after glass thrust in his direction, the cheerful barman, Mickey, explained that every wine had been handpicked by the WC team. Mickey, who has worked with wine for a number of years, is a recent addition to the staff. I love working with wine, so this was perfect. He is not alone. Jayke believes it shows a genuine interest in the unconventional venue.
The relatively small bar is surprisingly well stocked. As well as 12 to 15 wines by the glass or half-bottle, and a pricier reserve list of 20 to 30 wines, the bar will be serving a variety of cocktails and charcuterie sourced from British, eastern European and French suppliers.

Swirling around vino in a year-old former water closet is not out of the ordinary at this Clapham haunt. Snack on jalapeno and chorizo mac n cheese bites while dining in cubicles by candlelight or enjoy a classic tartiflette oozing with cheese, salami and sauvignon blanc. Very pleasant atmosphere. Wine list could be extended however, as for somewhere called ‘Wine and Charcuterie’, the wine list was a little limited.
The food is good quality. Don’t go there during bad weather however, as the ceiling leaks! The food and wine were great. However the service was not great. When we came in, the waitress did not help us with our coats because she said she could not reach the hook. It was quite rude. Also the tables are too small and the plates were just piled up. It would have been better if there was a raised rack to make more space. Very good service and staff were helpful in helping us select some lovely wines for a tasting.
Or even just a room full of people who have a social life away from a computer! SOUK was a nice enough venue. The bar was close to the Tube, and easy to find.
And even harder, can be poring over the wine list in a posh restaurant and convincing the sommelier – or your date – that you have any clue.

See some of the wines that are tickling our fancy from this wine region below:. Seriously aromatic white, plucked from between a rock and a hard place. From a very small 2. Super boutique Carignan from year-old vines, made by Roland and Anne-Marie. This wine is what Humble Grape is all about: super-boutique and highly unusual. Racine means ‘root’ and the roots of these 70 year old Carignan vines have had to dig in deep to sustain their vines.
The team have to work as hard as the vines as the surroundings are harsh, but they don’t irrigate, pest control is done naturally and all harvesting is done by hand. The result is bags of complexity in the fruit and rich concentration, but unfortunately extremely low yields, so we only ever get a handful of bottles. A bombardment of the senses.
